MARGARET RADCLIFFE’S KNITTING WORKSHOPS
Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 9:00 am to Noon
Edges and Borders – Perfect borders can be a pain to pick up. Learn how to pick up and complete your borders perfectly every time. During this workshop, you’ll work with five types of edges, learning to prepare your edges to make picking up a breeze, several pickup techniques, how to determine exactly the right number of stitches for each border, how to prevent curved borders from flaring, and how to enclose an edge so it looks great inside and out.
Skill level: Adventurous Beginner and up--Must know how to cast on, knit, purl, slip, work simple pattern stitches (garter, stockinette, ribbing), increase, decrease, and bind off.
Supplies: Plain, smooth, light-colored, worsted weight wool yarn in two contrasting colors. The yarns should be identical in weight and fiber content. Note that wool or wool blend yarns will be stretchy and much easier to work with in class than yarns with no elasticity. Needles sized appropriately for the yarn (US#6-8/4-5 mm), needles two sizes smaller and three sizes smaller. Hang tags (to label your swatches).
Homework: Make the following three swatches, using one color of yarn. Use the largest needles (see supply list) for your swatch. Bring them to class, with the contrasting color.
#1 Garter Stitch: Cast on 8 stitches. Work in garter stitch for 30 rows (15 ridges). Bind off. Do not slip any of the edge stitches—just knit every stitch.
#2 Garter Stitch with Slipped Edge: Cast on 8 Stitches. Pattern Row: Slip 1 knitwise, knit 6, purl 1. Repeat this row until the swatch is 30 rows long (15 ridges).
#3 Stockinette Stitch with Shaping: Cast on 41 stitches. Work even in stockinette stitch for 16 rows. Do not slip any of the edge stitches—just knit them on the right side and purl them on the wrong side. Bind off 8 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows (25 stitches remain). Decrease Row: K1, ssk, knit until 3 stitches remain, k2tog, k1. Work the Decrease Row on the next 8 right-side rows. Purl the wrong side rows. (9 stitches remain.) Work even in stockinette for 14 rows. Bind off.
Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Bring out the Best in your Variegated Yarn - Love that multicolor yarn? Hate the way it looks when you knit it? Whip those handpainted and variegated yarns into submission! Learn to bring out the best in your variegated yarn, how to avoid stripes, highlight desired colors, and emphasize texture. Review a variety of yarns and learn their properties, while knitting swatches to experiment with textured pattern stitches, multiple strands of yarn, and varying stitch counts. Also learn how to recognize which garments will work best with variegated yarn.
Student Skill Level: Experienced Beginner and up (should know how to knit, purl, cast on, bind off, increase and decrease)
Supplies: Worsted weight variegated yarn and a matching or contrasting solid yarn for swatching. Needles in a size appropriate for this yarn; a circular needle or set of dp needles in the same size; needles 2 and 4 sizes larger.
Homework: Using a worsted weight variegated yarn where each color is between 1” and 9” long, cast on 20 stitches. Work in stockinette until the colors seem to repeat somewhat regularly in your swatch. Increase or decrease a stitch or two and continue knitting until the colors begin to repeat again. Do this one more time. If your yarn doesn’t repeat, don’t despair, just work at least 5” TOTAL and then stop. Don’t bind off. Bring your swatch to class.
Sunday, April 23, 2017 from 9:00 am to Noon
Wonderful Woven Stitches - Using your two knitting needles and basic knitting stitches, discover the astonishing fabrics and textures you can create that imitate woven fabrics. Combine colors into tweeds, checks and polka dots (using only one color at a time, of course), and show off hand painted yarns to best advantage. Learn to weave in an additional strand of yarn as you knit. Amaze your knitting friends—some of these fabrics will stump the most experienced of them!
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner – should know how to cast on, knit, purl, bind off, and work simple pattern stitches.
Supplies: Small amount of worsted weight yarn in three colors for swatches, a pair of double pointed needles or a circular needle in a size appropriate to knit the yarn (about US #8 or 9 (5-5.5mm); tapestry or yarn needle; basic knitting supplies.
Homework: Cast on 12 stitches. Work in K1 P1 ribbing for 4”. Bind off.
Sunday, April 23, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Helix Knitting – Knit circular stripes with absolutely no jogs. No one will ever find your beginning and end of round. Use as few as two colors or as many as you like. This technique produces perfect interlocking spirals of each color. Class will cover casting on, shaping, and working on circular needles, magic loop, two circulars and double pointed needles.
Skill Level: Intermediate (students must be comfortable working small tubes in the round using at least ONE of the following methods: double pointed needles, two circular needles, or magic loop)
Materials: 4 different colors bulky yarn. Needles sized appropriately for this yarn, to knit a small tube. This can be a set of dp needles (7-8” long), a 12” circular needle, two circulars, or a needle at least 47” long with a very flexible cable for Magic Loop. Also a pair of dp needles sized for this yarn.
Homework: Using one color, cast on 36 stitches, join beginning and end of round being careful not to twist. Work K1P1 ribbing for 4 rounds. Do not cut yarn.
